Bloody Books: Kal Jerico: Sinners Bounty by Josh Reynolds
Josh Reynolds picks up the baton from the always-wonderful Gordon Rennie and Will McDermott to bring us another slice of adventure in the life of Kal Jerico. Lying somewhere between a reboot and a reintroduction, "Sinners Bounty" brings our suave bounty hunter and his partners (the always morose Scabbs and his kind-of-wife Yolanda) as they chase the trail of on Desolation Zoon, a Redemptionist who has managed to rattle and anger the Guilders. Fighting against time and those who also wish for the bounty offered, Kal must face the Underhive in all of it's myriad multiple murderous ways. Also muties.
Jerico is on top form in Reynold's hands, with his usual roguish charm and cocky wise-cracks. There's a few call-backs to earlier books, but nothing so in-depth it feels necessary to find and read those (though you should). Reynolds keeps things moving with sharp dialogue, a dry wit and a breathless pace to get to the prize. The pace does slow at times to explore the Underhive in some detail, with Scabbs and Yolanda getting plenty of time to shine. Granted, whilst we do get some mention of the Houses, the focus here is on a surprisingly nuanced House Cawdor and the Redemptionist cult. Watching the characters crash into each other like cats in a bag is tons of fun, coupled with a breezy style that never forgets the setting and how interesting said setting is as an environment makes for a light-hearted, carnage ridden bounce of a tale that both details the coolest parts of the setting and reminds you how good a Kal Jerico tale can be
