Sprue To Use - TreeS

Greetings Fluffers!

We all have a problem in our day to day hobbying . An issue of great magnitude that must be faced head on in order to slay the dragon that.......

Okay. that's a but much.

This is going to be a series of articles on how to use up the sprues that we all end up left with after a good day of mini-building, and thus, reduce the sheer amount of plastic waste that we throw into the bin without a second thought. If you have suggestions for future builds, or want to show off your own usage of spare sprues, please lets us know on the Fluffenhammer Facebook, or over on the Twitter.

For this entry, lets make some Sprue-ce Trees.

Geddit?

Nice and simple to start with, a oval cavalry base and a Orruk sprue, chopped up into small parts in order to make good, solid base.

Nice and rubbley.

I've used Hot Glue for this example, in order to make it quickly. Normally, I would use Plastic Cement for a more melty, less sharp effect.

Next up, I cut two L shapes, a longer "trunk" than top section, and symmetrical. These, once glued together, will form the body of the tree.

If you wanted, this is a decent start for a lamppost. It's a bit messy, but that's okay.

Next up, the texturing. I used a mix of PVA glue, leather and oak browns and flock, mixed in a old empty GW texture pot. The flock gives it a nice knobbly texture when dry. Whilst still wet..... it looks a little off-putting.

You may find that parts don't stick very well. That's okay, you can wait until it dries and add another layer if you want.

PVA and grass flock onto the base for grass, with has a good, rough look to it.

A bit of flock PVA glued into place long sections where the texture paint has not quite taken

And you have some trees! From start to finish, it takes around 20 mins to do each one. I intend to, when I have time, to go over the trunks of each tree in a series of browns to make them more "woody"
