Bloody Books Review: Grombrindal: Chronicles Of The Wanderer

It comes as something as a shock to realise that this tome is the very first time that Grombrindal, the White Dwarf himself has starred in, let alone fronted. It’s something of an odd beast, bearing six tales taken from White Dwarf and a short novel under the name of Lords of Stone, Fire and Sky. This book takes a look at the purpose that drives Grombrindal showing the different facets he presents of himself to differing protagonists in turn. How this is achieved is by Grombrindal being a secondary character in his own story with a range of characters from an Innskeeper’s daughter to the mighty Gotrek himself taking the lead. Each stands alone as a great read and all together they feed into a mythic overview for Grombrindal, making him both more than he seems and a tired ancient being indeed as he offers his advice and attempts to continue to subtly guide the Duardin back together as one race, and it’s done deftly. The Disposessed, the Fyreslayers and The Kharadron all have enough similarities and enough differences to show a fractured race but also one that can be reforged as one unified front. The choice to never see things from Grombrindal’s point of view allows him to keep that sense of otherness and distance but shows enough of his sense of humour to show the dwarf behind the titlr.
