My First Army by Uncle Nergling
Welcome dear Fluffer, to a semi-regular series where members of the community talk a little about the first forces they collected as they began this hobby of ours. We jump into a time machine with Alex and go way, way back
Battlemasters got me into the hobby and thus my first army was Chaos, Orcs and Goblins. The quintessential evil army in my nergly opinion! However, I wasn’t so much drawn to it but had it thrust upon me, as the boxed game was a birthday present from my uncle.
I had literally no idea that miniatures or wargaming existed until that fateful tipping point at aged 8yrs old. My dad always thought it was a waste of time and my mum couldn’t understand it. That being said my brother soon got involved and started off with the far less technical wargame Havoc with pre-painted miniatures, which was given to him as a present. Naturally this all led into Warhammer of various editions, but I still kept the old Chaos army going! So many opportunities with Chaos, that’s the beauty of it
it’s all flooding back now! What started with Heroquest and Space Crusade shortly after Battlemasters, brought me to Warhammer a bit later. I’m lucky enough to still have the first Orc I converted into an Ork kicking around in a box somewhere. Love those Orcs!
Basically the extent of my collecting has been Chaos, Orcs and Goblins, Space Orks, Undead and Chaos Renegades. I am now dabbling, in my ‘elder’ years in more nuanced collections; such as Space Wolves and Necromunda gangs. Oh and there’s always the ever present threat of buying every god damn Genestealer Cult model because they rock!
